Communities Welcoming Data Centers Without Realizing Strain They Put on Electric Grid–and Even Water Supplies

Through conveniences like digital purchases and streaming services, Big Tech is consuming enormous amounts of both water and electricity in the United States. In 2022, for example, data warehouses consumed 4 percent of U.S. electricity.

NTD spoke to Kevin Stocklin, a reporter for The Epoch Times, the producer of the documentary “The Shadow State,” and a former Wall Street banker. He says that communities are welcoming in these data centers—but without realizing how much of a strain they put on the electric grid and local water supplies. Mr. Stocklin notes there is increasing pushback from residents of Virginia, a state home to the so-called “Data Center Alley” through which some 70 percent of the world’s data passes.
