Lancaster’s Newest Comprehensive High School Ready for Students

August 11, 2009

NTD Architecture is pleased to announce that construction is complete on Eastside High School of the Antelope Valley Union High School District. As the District’s eighth comprehensive high school, the 343,000-square-foot facility was designed in response to rapid population growth and can support a student body of 3,500.

“Eastside High School was designed to truly be a focal point of the community and to respond to the community’s needs,” states Jay R. Tittle, AIA, Partner at NTD Architecture and Principal in Charge on the project. “With our initial planning process involving over 150 District staff and community members, we knew that our final design would versatile enough to support various functions for students, faculty, and the community alike.”

NTD Architecture’s Education Funding Services Department assisted the District with obtaining $48,551,070 in state and federal funds to contribute toward the cost of the new school. Eastside is equipped with 114 teaching stations, two computer labs and 11 science labs. A state-of-the-art performing arts complex will house a two-story, 600-seat theater, a dance studio, two gymnasiums and eight flexible use labs that are designed to accommodate future changes in curriculum.

Sustainable design played a key role in Eastside High School, which features room occupancy light sensors, optimized use of natural daylighting, a high-performance thermal energy storage central plant, high-performance glazing and insulation, and a cool roof with reflective coatings. Drought-resistant plants and landscaping will reduce the school’s dependency on potable water.

The team involved in the design and construction of Eastside High School includes NTD Architecture, Barnhart, Gott Construction, J.T. Engineering, KNA Consulting Engineers, Donn C Gilmore & Associates, Johnson Consulting Engineers, HKA Elevator Consulting, The Ruzika Company, Marshall Long Acoustics, RJC, Dewco, AHS, Willdan, and Cumming Corporation.
