Construction is underway on a new community center for the Truckee Donner Recreation & Park District in Truckee, California. Masterplanned and designed by NTD Architecture, the 40,000 SF facility (masterplanned at 100,000 SF) will serve as a year-round recreational resource to members of the Truckee community and will feature a sustainable design that incorporates elements of its natural surroundings. The project bid opening occurred in April for $13.2 M, well under the original budget of $17.3 M.
“We’ve designed this recreation center to be a warm and inviting retreat for community members to participate in social and recreational activities, especially during the cold winter months when outdoor conditions are less ideal,” says Jordan Knighton, AIA, Partner of NTD Architecture. “We’ve also included sustainable design elements like clerestory windows and ideal building orientation help to reduce the energy demand of the facility.”
The community center, which is estimated for completion in November 2009, will feature a two-court gymnasium with an elevated running track, a climbing wall, a fitness area, and a potential future-phased aquatic center to include recreation and competition pools. Two community rooms with a full-service catering kitchen will allow the center to support large community events and a central lobby/lounge area with a fireplace has been designed as an inviting environment where community members can relax. The center will also cater to the younger generation with such features as a dance studio, a pre-school room, and a future black box theater.
With respect to the environment and the facility’s natural surroundings, the Truckee Community Center has been designed with sustainability in mind. An atrium-style lobby and clerestory windows throughout the facility will allow natural light to spill down into the interior spaces of the building, and a north/south building axis will maximize the facility’s exposure to daylighting. Additionally, a blend of heavy timber, stone, and an earth tone palate will seamlessly integrate the facility into the surrounding Sierra Nevada.
