Construction has begun on the new Science Center at Foothill High School of the Tustin Unified School District. Designed by NTD Architecture, the two-story structure will include ten new laboratories and four classrooms complete with preparation areas and teacher collaboration spaces. Sustainability played a key role in the design of the center, with an ultimate goal of exceeding California’s Title 24 requirements by 20%.

In an effort to optimize the building’s use of natural light, NTD placed it on an East/West axis, allowing light to filter into every classroom space and controlling the need for heating and air conditioning. High performance mechanical systems and thermostats provided in every teaching space will provide individual control for comfortable environments. The use of lighting will be limited through high efficiency lighting with occupancy sensors.

  • high efficiency irrigation system with water efficient plumbing fixtures are used throughout
  • Photovoltaic cells and a Cool Roof System
  • Recycling – recycled content used in materials and finishes, recycling center on site, approximately 75% of construction waste will be recycled

Funding for the $18.5M project was realized through the Measure G Campus Modernization Program that was passed in 2002 for the renovation of Tustin Unified School District’s 20 oldest schools. Douglas E. Barnhart, Inc. is providing construction management on the Science Center, which will open to students for the first time in the fall of 2009.
