NTD Architecture is pleased to report that the firm has been awarded the Services Expansion of Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women. NTD designed the original freestanding women’s hospital back in 1992, which was awarded a “Design Award for Excellence” by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. The firm will provide architectural and engineering design services for the Acute Care Unit and Continuing Care Nursery/NICU along with related infrastructure upgrades to the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.

“We are thrilled to have been selected for the Services Expansion and we are anxious to bring the facility up to date with modern design and technology,” says Wayne Hunter, AIA, ACHA, Partner at NTD Architecture. “We greatly value our relationship with Sharp and we look forward to the successful completion of these renovations.”

Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women is a high-traffic women’s hospital, delivering approximately 8,000 babies a year and providing a full range of services for women of all ages. The six-story, 197,000 SF freestanding hospital is one of the first freestanding women’s hospitals in the nation. For the original design, NTD provided programming, masterplanning, architecture, and interior design services. The facility was planned with sensitivity toward the varying needs of women.

The budget for the Services Expansion is $9.8 M and construction is anticipated to begin as early as March of 2009. Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women is located at 3003 Health Center Drive in San Diego, California.
