Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) blasted Democrat colleagues in a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday after they, in a strict party-line vote, elected to dismiss the House’s articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Mr. Cruz described the vote to toss the impeachment charges as “shameful.” He then proceeded to criticize Democrats for, as he put it, allowing Mr. Mayorkas to “openly defy the law” for reasons of “political expediency.”

In illustrating the results of Mr. Mayorkas’ alleged failure to apply U.S. law, Mr. Cruz described crimes committed by human traffickers, conditions near the U.S.—Mexico border, and deaths from drug overdoses stemming from fentanyl originating in China and being smuggled across the Southern border.
