“It just hasn’t set in yet because Kyrell was a healthy boy,” said his mother.

A 13-year-old boy died during a middle school football practice in Fort Worth, Texas, on Aug. 22.

Kyrell McBride-Johnson, an eighth-grade student at Summer Creek Middle School, had a medical emergency that led coaches to perform CPR on him. He was unresponsive.

Johnson was in critical condition when the paramedics took him to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest.

The 13-year-old was then transferred to Cook Children’s Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

The cause of death is currently unknown. Johnson had just transferred to Summer Creek from Mansfield ISD.

Monica watched her son practice with the team from the car, she was waiting for him to get his water.

During the water break, her 13-year-old son passed up the water as he moved toward her and began moving differently.

“And he just locked and turned and fell. Just collapsed,” said Monica.

No Signs of Problems

Kyrell had passed his physical exams without any signs of risk and had no known heart conditions, Fox 4 News reported.

Although he had pass those exams, Monica McBride-Debbs, his mother, did mention that he had asthma that hadn’t flared up in years.

Monica said that he was known for his achievements in sprinting for the Hallmark Eagles. He ran the entire season without any medical issues even though it was hot.

This year he switched to football, he had a passion for athletics and a love for dance.

“He is like a shining star,” Monica said, “you put him in a room. He’s gonna light up the whole room. He likes to dance.”

Michael McFarland, superintendent of Crowley ISD, made a statement following the 13-year-old’s death, CBS DFW reported.

“The entire Crowley ISD community is incredibly saddened by this tragedy and the loss of this young life. We do not yet know what caused Kyrell’s passing, but our priority right now is to provide support and care to the family, friends and educators who knew and loved him.”
