In 2013, 0ver 900 people were arrested in eastern China in a fake meat ring scandal. Up to 20,000 tons of meat was passed off as mutton and found to contain everything from fox, mink, and even rat meat. Around 400 cases of meat-related offenses were investigated following a three-month national campaign.

One man charged in the case told how he processed fox meat as mutton after obtaining it from a farm. The flavor and the lower cost made it profitable. According to suspects in the cases, the fake meat made them $1.6 million in profit.
