At least 21 people were killed and more than a dozen injured on Tuesday night, April 17, as a truck headed towards a wedding fell off a bridge in India’s central Sidhi district.

“We have been informed that there were 40-45 people, out of which 21 were killed and 14 admitted to the district hospital in Sidhi,” Platoon Commander, Home Guard City, Kaushal Prashad Dwivedi, told Reuters.

The tragedy occurred when the truck driver was said to have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to hit a divider and fall off the bridge over the river Son, crashing onto a dry riverbed. The impact of the fall crushed the truck and killed many instantly.

Chief of Madhya Pradesh state, home to Sidhi, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, announced a compensation of 200,000 rupees ($3,045) for the kin of the deceased and 50,000 rupees ($767) for those injured.
