3-year-old twins drown at home in pool

Police say that a pair of 3-year-old twin boys have died after drowning in a backyard pool in Long Island, New York, it was reported.

Suffolk County Police said officers responded to the incident, which took place in Melville, New York, at 8:40 a.m. local time on Wednesday after a woman called 911.

The mother said her 3-year-old son was pulled from her pool and wasn’t breathing. She then performed CPR on him, saying that his twin brother was missing.

The second child was found in the pool when rescue personnel responded to the scene, police told WABC-TV in New York.

The boys’ mother had just woken up and she saw one of the twins floating in the pool. She then ran outside and performed CPR. The boys’ father had reportedly left for work that day.

“The hospital worked feverishly for a different outcome, but it was not to be today,” said Andrea Mineo, a spokeswoman for Plainview Hospital, according to the New York Daily News.

A fire official elaborated on the incident.

“My members described it as that they just could not see at the bottom of the pool,” Melville Assistant Chief David Kaplan told CBS New York. “Four of our members immediately went into the pool and within a few minutes after being in the pool, because there was very little visibility in the pool, they were able to locate a second child. That child was pulled from the pool and we began life-saving treatment on the second child also.”

Town officials told CBS New York that the pool met all the code requirements and it was recently inspected.

It’s unclear how the boys got out of the house.
