Presley Stockton, 4, drowned in a 4-star hotel swimming pool in a resort in Los Cristianos after his armbands were removed so he could eat properly on Sep. 19, 2018.

Stockton, a native of Hindley near Wigan, Greater Manchester, died just a day after arriving with his family at the popular resort, the Paradise Park hotel.

He was playing along the poolside and complained about the armbands, as he couldn’t eat properly. He was later pulled out of the swimming pool, where his body was found floating face down, according to The Mirror.

“He was bought some armbands to wear around the pool and other items to play with by his family,” said his dad, Peter Stockton in a written statement to The Mirror.

“On Sept. 19, Presley and his family had been around the pool, where he played wearing his armbands.

“At lunchtime, in the early afternoon, he had something to eat.

“He complained that he couldn’t eat properly with the armbands on so they were taken off,” the dad said.

A little while later he went to the pool where the incident happened.

“Suddenly his father heard one of the children shouting ‘Presley,'” said Senior coroner Alan Walsh.

“It was discovered that he had gone in the pool.

“He was rescued and attempts were made to resuscitate him, but sadly he had died at the hotel.”

Paramedics were unable to resuscitate him. Stockton died of drowning, according to post mortem conducted at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Walsh told The Mirror: “I am satisfied that precautions were taken.

“He had been playing around the pool wearing armbands.

“The problem seems to have arisen when he had something to eat.

“They were taken off for a short time and during that short time he was with his friends around the pool, he went in and sadly became unresponsive.

“I accept that it was a sudden, unexpected event with unintended consequences.

“I am greatly saddened by the tragedy of a 4-year-old excited about his holiday and being with family and friends.

“There were precautions taken with the exception of that very short period. It’s unimaginable to me that this should occur in this moment.”

Granddad Starts a Campaign

His granddad recently started a campaign to raise funding for preschool swimming lessons; to prevent more children from meeting the same fate.

Since Little P’s death, as he was fondly called, his family, particularly his granddad Mike Jolley, 49, have campaigned to raise awareness about swimming lessons for pre-schoolers.

“When I was a child it was compulsory to take swimming lessons, even at nursery. It should be like that now.

“There should be more funding for youngsters of pre-school age. I want to do this for Presley. I want to make people more aware of the importance of learning how to swim,” said Jolley.

His campaign to raise more funding for pre-school swimming lessons is supported by Makerfield MP, Yvonne Fovargue.

“This would be a fitting tribute to the memory of Presley.

“Swimming is a vital life skill that helps to keep people fit and healthy but also teaches children how to stay safe in and around water,” Fovargue told The Mirror.
