50th day of Venezuela protest marked by more violence

Hundreds of thousands of protesters thronged the streets of Venezuelan cities. They came out to mark the 50th day of demonstrations against President Nicolás Maduro.

Police and national guard soldiers met the marchers. Both sides turned to violence.

Police and soldiers used tear gas and clubs. Demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails and rocks.

The demonstrations show no signs of letting up.

At least 46 people have been killed during the unrest. Both protesters and police have been killed. Some demonstrations have devolved into looting. Despite the danger the protests seems to be gaining momentum.

President Nicolás Maduro took power in 2013. Since then, the oil-rich nation has gone bankrupt. There are shortages of food and medicine.

Maduro has tried to shut down Congress. He has called a hand-picked panel to rewrite the constitution. He has also jailed journalists and political opponents.

Maduro blames the unrest on the United States. He said the United States is trying to take over the country.
