September 23rd, Asian in New York held their 2017 Fashion Show at the China Institute, featuring 6 talented designers who showcased their collections. Let’s see what the 6 designers have to say about their collections at this year’s fashion show.
Alexander King Chen, a fashion designer who flew from Taiwan to attend the show mixed two cultures together, “this season we wanted to do kind of like a mix of Asia and the East and the West together. But this season we wanted to play with something that was in my mind – it’s the first time we’ve even done menswear like there’s one coat – if you look at it closely it’s got the dissection of a lotus flower…
Liling Wang, the other fashion designer who flew from Taiwan made her collection geared towards a younger crowd, “this collection is a bit younger. We made a lot of prints that were to do with animals which are more youthful with a formal mixed with street style feel.”
Jennifer Chen, Los Angeles fashion designer from Taiwan based her collections on New York, “so this season, the name of the collection is actually New Yorker. Every piece has mix material compared to the standard down jacket that you see on the street… I always mix with like, knits or mesh or different material to represent the different layers and cultures of New York City.”
Danny Nguyen, Vietnamese fashion designer drew his inspiration from Taiwan and different flowers, “this collection – from my trip I took recently to Wyoming to see a wildlife, I went camping to see different colored flowers, neon, not your typical red and yellow but more purple, pink, white – different types of flowers for the idea of the collection.”
Wendy, Jewelry designer, didn’t make a clothing collection but paired her designs with the other designer’s looks on the runway, enhancing their beauty and textures, “so I’m actually teaming up with all the fashion designers to accessorize all the models of the runway looks. You’re going to see some crystal clutches with Swarovski crystals, necklaces, rings and bangles, there are a few custom pieces.”
The designers put a lot of work and effort into the show which can be seen through the audience’s reactions.
Jennifer Le (bottom left), Asian media personality and host of Hot97 radio said it was her first time at the show. “It was beautiful, this is my first time here, I’ve never been here before, and I’m kind of upset at myself that I haven’t been here to see all these amazing Asian designers in one place… I love Edison Lu, I saw a girl wearing this tool dress with a sweatshirt, I was like I have to wear that, I have to have that at an event!”
Let’s see which designers AsianInNY will invite for next year’s fashion show!
