As workers dump water from a reservoir, to work on a hydro power gate renovation, in Jiangxi Province in the east of China; locals have discovered an old submerged Buddha statue, revealed by the falling water levels.
Until now only the head has appeared above the water line, the rest of the statue, as well as a possible submerged temples are still waiting to be revealed. It has attracted many tourists, as well as locals, who see it as an auspicious sign.
According to archaeologists, this statue could date back to Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), or maybe even further back to the Yuan Dynasty.
The staute itself is potentially just the tip of the iceberg. Divers have discovered the base of a temple hall, and local records show that the completed reservoir, flooded the ruins of an ancient town, known as Xiaoshi.
Xu Changqing, the director of the Research Institute of Archaeology of Jiangxi province said, “An underwater archaeology team is investigating both the ancient town, as well as the statue, and is currently working on a preservation plan.”
