Rescue boats brought in 700 migrants from flimsy boats along the north African coast. The rescue was a team effort, led by the Italian coast guard. Malta-based MOAS took 300 people to safety from three of the boats. SOS Mediterranee and Doctors without Borders navigated a second ship to bring in the remaining four boats of migrants.

Migrants arriving in Italy are up 30 percent this year. Of the many attempting the journey, 600 have died in 2017.
