A piece of the Berlin Wall will go to auction in Mexico City on May 27.

The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 to prevent East Germans from fleeing to the West. The wall came down in 1990 after the fall of communist regimes across Europe.

Luis Alonso is the current owner of the piece.

“Let this historic piece that is three tons, 3.5 meters high be preserved. In the future there will be a lot of young people that will appreciate it, in a school, in a factory, in a public space, wherever. Let the piece continue to have an effect on people on the planet, as historic pieces should be,” he said.

Morton auction house is managing the sale. The item will come with proof of authenticity.
