Let’s get cracking! Adorable sea otter pups learn to open hard mollusk shells

These cute creatures, sea otters, are the smallest and nimblest of the marine mammals.

They are skilled at using tools, like a flat stone resting on their tummy, to open the hard shells of mollusks and sea urchins they pick up from the sea bottom. For other prey however, they don’t need a tool—they rip open prey like crabs with their forepaws.

The video shows how a mother sea otter takes care of the pups, teaching them how to swim, hunt, and open hard shells with tools.

The skill of opening clams’ shells is not easy to learn. Not all of them get it right at once. Watch the video and see how these adorable sea otter pups manage to open the stubborn clams and enjoy their dinner!
