Alarming Disasters and Extreme Weather in China; Viral Corn Video Raises Food Concerns

Areas in Eastern China were evacuated over typhoon warnings, and it could impact parts of Zhejiang, Fujian, Shanghai, and elsewhere. Chinese state media reports that the Ministry of Emergency Management warned of heavy rains in parts of southern China from August 1 to August 6.

Meanwhile, a recent finding with stores of Chinese corn is deepening concerns about a possible food crisis in China. In early July, a video revealing corn quality issues in the Zhaodong Depot, which is a direct deposit warehouse branch of the China Grain Reserves Corp. has been circulating online. The corn being stored there can be “crushed between fingers into powder, and there is a thick layer of dust and impurities on them.”
