American University in Washington D.C. was placed on lockdown amid reports of an armed intruder, the campus said in an alert on Wednesday afternoon.

The armed intruder was located near the campus, not on the campus, the school said.

“Reports of armed intruder near campus. Lock doors & stay away from windows-If outside, leave campus immediately-Police responding. More info to follow,” the school wrote at 1:26 p.m. ET. “Lockdown continues. Investigation is focused on Main Campus, East Campus, and 3201 New Mexico. Shuttle ops are suspended. Continue to shelter in place,” the university also wrote.

At around 2:45 p.m. ET, the school said, “Lockdown continues. Investigation and bldg searches ongoing by AUPD, MPD, and Secret Service. If outside leave campus-if inside shelter in place.”

Local reports say that Campus Road is closed.

Steph Black, a Twitter user, has claimed that she’s locked in an office.

“American University police are saying there’s an armed … [intruder] on campus near New Mexico ave. Those on campus, stay safe. I’m currently locked in the office in the Museum,” she wrote on Twitter.

This is a developing story.
