A kind-hearted nanny donates part of her liver to a dying toddler

Quiet often, when immediate family members are hesitant and reluctant to part with their precious organs, even for their loved ones — there are always some angels who come in to help! Like this nanny, who did not think twice before she offered her love and part of her liver to the child under her care.

Talia Rosko, was a little 9-weeks-old toddler. Her doctors noticed signs of jaundice when they examined her eyes. On further testing, the newborn was diagnosed to have Biliary Atresia — a life threatening condition, where the liver function is affected.

She was immediately put on a waiting list for organ donation. The family hoped for the best and waited for a matching donor.

George and Farra Rosko, Talia’s parents, could not manage to look after the children by themselves. It was then that they met 22-year-old Kiersten Miles. She was hired by the Rosko’s  as a nanny to care for Talia and their two other children.

Miles was a caring and loving soul. In a short period of just a few weeks she fell in love with Talia. She could not bear to think that this little, helpless soul was in such a dreadful condition, and considered ways of how she could be of help.

After much contemplation, Miles made up her mind that she could be the one to save little Talia’s life!

Miles knew her blood type was O, which, as a donor, is compatible with all other blood types. She voiced her desire to the elated parents, and Miles decided to donate part of her liver to Talia.

“I was very taken aback,” Farra Rosko told the Washington Post. “I didn’t know that she was this selfless — I’ve come to find out that this is who she is. She really is an angel on earth; I know that sounds silly, but she really is.”

On January 11, Miles underwent surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and her part of liver was rushed to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where they implanted it in Talia.

As Miles recovered from the effect of anesthesia, she was concerned whether the surgery was a success. That is when the doctor spoke to her. “He told me that I could definitely see her in the next couple of days. He said she was doing great. And when he left, I just started bawling.”

It took her a few days to recover. Miles then went to see Talia for the first time. Little Talia opened her eyes and smiled at Miles.

That was when all of Miles pains and anxiety disappeared, and she thought that was the most precious moment of her life.

For a young, 22-yr-old college student to make such a sacrifice for a child and family she hardly knew, was just amazing. Perhaps, if we could all take a lesson out of Miles’ example, the world would be a wonderful place to live in.

What an amazing feeling it must be to contribute to offering a new life to another.
