German Chancellor Angela Merkel made remarks on the 60-year anniversary of the European Union. EU leaders have arrived in Rome to celebrate the Union’s founding in the place where it was first established.
Merkel made remarks on her hopes for the future of the EU.
“The Europe of different speeds does not mean that there is not a unified Europe. We clearly say that we want to go in the same direction, and there are some things nonnegotiable like the single market, the four basic freedoms, that are our values of liberty, of freedom of opinion, freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, and that makes us strong together, and we shall not compromise on that.”
The EU anniversary proceedings come four days before the United Kingdom will arrive in Rome to file for an exit. Prime Minister Theresa May will officially sign papers to leave the Union.
