Australian mining magnate gives $298 million to charity

Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest donated US$298 million to several charities. This is the biggest charitable donation Australia has ever seen.

“I’ve been very fortunate with my wife, Nicola to be able to accumulate capital and then as soon as we could to commence giving it away,” Forrest said.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said, “It’s is a game changer in the Australian philanthropic community and it will change the lives of thousands of people here in Australia and around the world.”

Forrest’s donation will be divided into four sectors, with $56 million going to each—cancer research, higher education, childhood education, and fighting modern slavery.
