An Australian man died while trekking in the Nepalese Himalayas on Friday (3 March).

According to information provided to Pardip Karki, Manager of the Trekking Agents Association of Nepal, Matthew Paul Jones was returning from Mount Everest Base Camp when he died.

The cause is believed to be altitude sickness.

“We have spoken to the friends he had been trekking with and the representative from the embassy, to prepare his body to be sent back to Australia with the necessary documents,” Karki told Reuters TV in Kathmandu on Monday (March 6).

A spokesperson for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said they were providing consular assistance to the man’s family.
