A bear cub that accidentally locked itself in a truck was set free after officers broke the car window. Meanwhile, its mother waited impatiently nearby.

The incident happened Oct. 26 in Truckee, California. The Truckee Police Department was informed in the morning that a bear cub was found stuck inside a truck and the mother bear was right outside.

Police said that “the doors closed behind the cub and the mom was left outside” in a statement. The mother bear tried to free the cub but “she tried a little too hard and broke the door handles off, leaving no way out for her cub.”

The video showed that officers first use beanbag rounds to drive the mom away from the truck. Then one of the officers broke the window of the passenger seat to create an exit for the cub. Finally, the cub clambered out of the vehicle to safety.

Police shared the video as a reminder that people should always lock their car doors, especially those who live in bear country.
