Behind 20 Years of Forensic Work to Identify 9/11 Victims

Our guest Mechthild Prinz, was the Assistant Director of Forensic Biology for the Chief Medical Examiner of New York City on September 11, 2001. Remarkably, the monumental work her team started of identifying thousands of victims of the terror attack, continues until today.

As a testament to that painstaking effort, this week, two more victims were identified, bringing the total up to 1,647, or about 60 percent of the nearly 3,000 who died that dark day.

New York City’s Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Barbara Sampson, said in a statement: “Twenty years ago, we made a promise to the families of World Trade Center victims to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to identify their loved ones, and with these two new identifications, we continue to fulfill that sacred obligation.”
