Beijing Tightens Control in Tibet

Beijing is boosting its efforts to promote the Chinese language in Tibetan schools. The language shift aims to weaken Tibetans’ ties to their own culture—and promote Chinese culture in its place.

After winter break, Tibetan students returned to school, but found that their classes taught only in Chinese.
