Beijing’s Presence in Western Social Media

The Chinese Communist Party boasts a massive social media presence in the West. A recent study found that in just nine months, Chinese diplomats posted over 200,000 times on Twitter and over 34,000 times on Facebook. Chinese state-run media posted over 700,000 times during the same period.

Oxford University’s Internet Institute and the Associated Press conducted the study. They found that Beijing is using this presence to shape public discourse.
