A first-of-its-kind ban on tobacco took effect in Beverly Hills on the first day of the year, Friday, Jan. 1, 2021. It’s reportedly the first city council in the nation to enact a ban like this.

Beverly Hills has more than just upscale shopping and Hollywood stars, it now has its very own one-of-a-kind city-wide ban on tobacco products.

City Council passed the ban in June of 2019, and it took effect on New Years Day.  Businesses can no longer sell tobacco, but there are some exceptions for existing cigar lounges.

City Council voted on the measure following input and recommendations from the City’s Health and Safety Commission.

Then-mayor of the city John Mirisch said at the time: “We are a City that has taken the lead on restricting smoking and promoting public health. Somebody has to be first, so let it be us.”

Mayor Lester Friedman said Tuesday that 30 years ago the city became the first in California to ban smoking in restaurants.  He said Beverly Hills has “continued to implement policies that will ultimately save lives.”

The city is set to revisit the ordinance in three years.
