Bill on its way through Parliament to allow Japanese emperor to give up throne

The Japanese parliament may soon allow abdication. The current Japanese emperor feels he is too old.

The lower house passed the bill. The upper house must next approve it. It would be the first time in 200 years for abdication. The bill would only allow abdication for Emperor Akihito.

The bill also allows females to remain royal after marriage. Currently, royal women become commoners after marriage.
