At least 18 people missing and feared dead following a blast at a military explosives facility in Tennessee on Friday morning.

Officials had originally said 19 people were missing, but Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency updated that number Friday night after they said one person believed to be on site was found safe at home.

The explosion happened at Accurate Energetic Systems in the Bucksnort area just before 8 a.m. local time.

“We do have several people at this time unaccounted for. We are trying to be mindful of families and that situation,” Humprheys County Sheriff Chris Davis said at a news conference. “We do have some that are deceased.”

<a href="https://www.localmemphis.com/article/news/nation-world/explosion-bucksnort-tennessee-accurate-energetic-systems-explosives-manufacturer/507-4dd50c52-d1eb-433e-b4dd-15c1d154dca7?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter_ABC24Memphis">Local media footage</a> from the scene showed large flames, plumes of black smoke, and charred debris spread across a wide field. Residents living miles away reported feeling the explosion on Friday morning.

According to its <a href="https://www.aesys.biz/about">official website</a>, the facility specializes in the development, manufacture, handling, and storage of products and explosives for military, aerospace, and commercial demolition markets.

The production site is situated on 1,300 acres about fifty miles west of Nashville along Interstate 40.

The facility includes eight specialized production buildings and a lab to analyze products.

"Our manufacturing facilities are designed with environmental control systems to ensure optimal conditions for the production of high-quality energetics and explosives," its website states.

Law enforcement urged the public on Friday to avoid the area and follow instructions from local authorities.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said investigators are trying to determine what happened and couldn't say what caused the explosion. Emergency crews were initially unable to enter the plant because of continuing detonations, said Hickman County Advanced EMT David Stewart.
