Boat makers in India see business pick up as floodwaters rise

With the onset of monsoon season, people are battling floods in various parts of India, however, boat makers in northern Uttar Pradesh State are happy that their business is picking up.

This year, most parts of northern India have received above average rainfall, resulting in a flood-like situation in many. With major road routes, farmlands and bridges being affected, the situation has been grim for humans as well.

But boat makers in northern Kanpur city are busy carving out boats to be delivered to their customers in different parts of the country.

A local boat maker, Krishan Kumar, said on Tuesday, July 4,  that their boats were very much in demand as they are very cheap and have are durable.

Boat maker Basant agreed.

“Boats made here are very good. They are used in saving people during floods, and it is not very costly,” said boat maker Basant.

Kumar also said their boats play a crucial role in saving people in flood-affected areas.

The boat makers use babul wood to prepare the boat’s frame. The wood is easily available and has a lifespan of three years. The boat’s body is made of steel.
