A body was found inside a partially burned vehicle at a parking lot outside a Kansas City, Missouri, high school Tuesday night, authorities said.

Police have launched a death investigation into the shocking discovery, though investigators noted that foul play is not suspected, according to a statement from the Cass County Sheriffs Office (CCSO).

The department initially responded at about 1:30 a.m. to a car fire inside the parking lot of Ray-Pec High School on South School Road in Peculiar.

Upon arrival, responding officers found the partially burned vehicle and a human body inside the car.

Investigators determined Tuesday the victim was not involved in a car accident, the police statement said, and detectives believe the cause of the victim’s death may be suicide.

The Medical Examiner’s Office of Frontier Forensics is working to determine a cause of death and a possible identification of the victim.

CCSO deputies assisted Peculiar police and local state fire marshal’s in the overnight death investigation, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
