NEW YORK—Take an adventure through a tropical forest or semi-desert at the New York Botanical Garden’s 18th orchid show. Jeff Leatham, floral designer and famed artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, was the guest designer for this year’s show. He arranged each intricate detail–resulting in an exquisite work of art.
Leatham told NTD, “So the theme of this year’s show was ‘color kaleidoscope,’ and the reason we chose that name is that every room you walk into as you walk through the observatory features a different color experience. There’s a different experience with textures and all the different varieties of these beautiful orchids.”

Numerous shades of purple, red, yellow, and orange pop out at you, making the exhibit a color-filled journey. It starts with a mirrored orchid sculpture arching over a fountain of streaming water. Then, a kaleidoscopic tunnel transports visitors from one color scheme to the next.
It took six months to piece together this floral adventure, and the Garden’s Senior Curator of orchids, Marc Hachadourian, said there’s a reason behind the exhibit’s winter-time debut.
“It’s at the time of year where people are just starved for color, warmth, humidity, and a little bit of green here in New York City and it really is the perfect place to be on a cold winter day surrounded by a tropical rain forest full of incredible flowers,” said Hachadourian.
Orchids are undoubtedly unique flowers. Even within groups of similar colors, each orchid shows off its personality with a unique design. This year’s show will run from Saturday, February 15th through Sunday, April 19th.
