A 6-year-old boy was killed in a deadly crash that also killed his pregnant mother and his two brothers.
The crash took place on Monday, July 24, in Beecher, Ill., according to officials, as reported by ABC7.
Owen Schmidt died at the Comer Children’s Hospital at 2:39 a.m. Thursday, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office told ABC7.
The other victims were identified as 29-year-old mother Lindsey Schmidt, 21-month-old brother Kaleb, and 4-year-old Weston.
“We are just so heartbroken,” said Crystal Johnson, who lives in Beecher, after friends and family gathered to pray for the family on Wednesday.
The family was just one block away from their home when the accident took place. A 25-year-old driver of a truck that hit their car was injured in the crash. Investigators are trying to ascertain whether the driver should face charges.
Officials are now trying to determine if the driver of the truck was texting on his phone or not before the accident.
The name of the driver wasn’t released.
“We are a small town. This is what we do,” said Crystal Johnson, who was the prayer vigil organizer, according to the Daily-Journal. “Our hearts just hurt when we heard the news. We just wanted to get everybody together and pray. We are here to support the family.”
