A Bronx man died in hospital after he was shot in the shoulder last week for not giving up his ring, leaving his family, particularly his girlfriend and mother, distraught.

Jensy Amparo, 26, was returning to his car from Munchies Deli and Grocery on Grand Concourse and E. 167th St. in Highbridge on March 21, when an armed man confronted him at about 3 a.m.

“The guy wanted his ring. It was gold with diamonds,” Amparo’s longtime girlfriend Yamilah Rodriguez, 22, told Daily News. “The guy saw the ring in the store and followed him to his car.”

The armed man opened the passenger door of Amparo’s 2018 Honda sedan and threatened to shoot if not given the ring. Amparo resisted and the man shot him in the right shoulder.

Amparo hit the gas on being shot and then crashed his car into three other cars in the parking lot, police told Daily News.

“He was shot in the shoulder, but due to the loss of blood, his brain wasn’t getting enough oxygen. He was brain dead,” Rodriguez said.

She said a woman, their friend, was also in the car with Amparo and suffered leg injuries.

Amparo, who worked as a construction worker, died on Saturday but was kept on life support until Monday night. “We had to pull the plug,” she told Daily News. “We’re all devastated, his mom especially.”

Rodriguez described Amparo as a caring person, even though he was facing criminal charges in four pending cases in Manhattan, including an armed robbery and a gang assault. Police were not sure if the shooting was related to those incidents.

“That has nothing to do with what happened that night,” said Rodriguez. “That’s way off topic.”

NYPD sought public assistance in identifying the suspect who was described as male, black, and 20 to 25 years old, according to The Bronx Times.

Police have asked anyone with information related to this incident to call the NYPD‘s Crime Stoppers hotline at 1800577TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 188857PISTA (74782). Tips can also be submitted by logging onto the Crime Stoppers’ website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.

Americans Killed by Guns

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s figures say 39,773 Americans were killed by guns in 2017. This was the highest number of gun deaths in the past five decades, according to The Trace.

However, the rate of gun homicides has fluctuated in the past 10 years.

This year, there have been 11,864 incidents of gun violence that led to 3,195 deaths, according to the gun violence archive.
