Bryan Kohberger, the former Washington State University graduate student accused of killing four University of Idaho students in a grisly 2022 attack, pleaded guilty Wednesday to four counts of murder in a deal that spares him the death penalty.

Kohberger, 30, admitted in court to the fatal stabbings of Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen, whose deaths shocked the quiet college town of Moscow and drew national attention.

The plea agreement, accepted just weeks before Kohberger was set to stand trial in August, ensures he will serve four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole and waives his right to appeal.
<h2>Courtroom Reactions and Family Responses</h2>
During the hearing, Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson detailed the sequence of events, stating that Kohberger first killed Mogen and Goncalves together before encountering Kernodle, who was awake, and then Chapin, who was asleep at the time of the attack.

The prosecutor emphasized there were no signs of sexual assault and described defensive wounds on some of the victims, who were all stabbed multiple times.

As Judge Steven Hippler read out the charges, naming each victim, family members in the courtroom wept and wiped away tears, while Kohberger remained without an expression. Some relatives looked away, while others watched Kohberger intently as he entered his plea.

Reactions among the victims’ families were divided.

The <a href="https://www.ntd.com/bryan-kohberger-to-plead-guilty-in-2022-idaho-stabbings-under-deal-to-avoid-death-penalty_1076512.html">Goncalves family</a>, who had opposed the plea deal, said they were angered by the deal in a post on Facebook, writing, “We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho. They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected.”

Kaylee Goncalves’ father, Steve Goncalves, left the courthouse before the proceedings, telling reporters, “I’m just getting out of this zoo.”

In contrast, the family of Ethan Chapin supported the agreement, as did the relatives of Madison Mogen, who released a statement through their attorney: “While we know there are some who do not support it, we ask that they respect our belief that this is the best outcome for the victims, their families and the state of Idaho. We now embark on a new path. We embark on a path of hope and healing.”
<h2>Investigation and Evidence</h2>
The investigation into the Nov. 13, 2022, killings was extensive, involving a nationwide search that ended with Kohberger’s arrest at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania weeks later.

Police tracked a white sedan seen repeatedly near the crime scene and used genetic genealogy to identify Kohberger as a suspect. Investigators matched his DNA, collected from a Q-tip found in his parents’ garbage, to genetic material recovered from a knife sheath left at the scene.

Authorities also uncovered that Kohberger had purchased a military-style knife and a matching sheath months before the attack. Following the murders, he bought a replacement sheath, thoroughly cleaned his apartment and office, and nearly disassembled his car.

Thompson noted that Kohberger’s academic background included detailed studies on crime scene processing, stating: “The defendant has studied crime. In fact, he did a detailed paper on crime scene processing when he was working on his Ph.D., and he had that knowledge skill set.”
<h2>Lingering Questions and Plea Deal Details</h2>
Despite the guilty plea, the motive for the killings remains unknown. Authorities said Kohberger had visited the victims’ neighborhood at least a dozen times before the attack, but there was no evidence he had any relationship with the victims or that he targeted the two surviving roommates. Kohberger’s defense team maintained he was simply out for a long drive at the time of the murders.

The plea deal was reached after Kohberger’s lawyers approached prosecutors seeking to avoid the death penalty. Prosecutors said they consulted with the victims’ families before agreeing to the deal, emphasizing that it would spare them from the uncertainty and trauma of a lengthy trial and appeals process.

In a letter to the families, prosecutors wrote: “This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and the other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction, appeals. Your viewpoints weighed heavily in our decision-making process, and we hope that you may come to appreciate why we believe this resolution is in the best interest of justice.”

Judge Hippler scheduled Kohberger’s official sentencing for July 23, stating that public opinion would not influence his decision to accept the plea agreement. “This court cannot require the prosecutor to seek the death penalty, nor would it be appropriate for this court to do that,” Hippler said.
