California state lawmakers recently proposed a bill to build large scale offshore wind farms along its 900 mile coast, part of the state’s goal to achieve 100 percent renewable energy by 2045.

However, the proposal has raised concerns about the reliability of California’s power grid.

California has the second largest energy consumption in the United States, but is also the largest importer of out-of-state energy. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2019, California’s net electricity imports were the largest in the country at 70.8 million megawatt hours (MWh), or 25 percent of the state’s total electricity supply.
