Migrants could be seen illegally crossing the US-Canada border on Monday (February 20).

CTV News footage showed a family crossing the border with a baby.

The people were immediately arrested and taken into police custody.

CTV reports that it’s standard practice for migrants who cross the border illegally to be taken into custody by police then handed over to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), which usually releases them within a few hours.

CTV says that a very small percentage of the people who cross the border outside of an authorized border crossing are detained for more screening and possible deportation.

Most migrants are released and put in touch with social services while they prepare a refugee claim.

CBSA officials say last month there were 452 border crossers entering Quebec to claim asylum, a figure three times higher than the previous January.

Other provinces bordering the US have also seen a rise in illegal border crossings, such as Manitoba and British Columbia.
