Former senior civil servant Carrie Lam has been picked to be Hong Kong’s chief executive for the next five years.

Lam was chosen by a handpicked, pro-Beijing “election committee.”

Most of Hong Kong’s 7.3 million voters have no say in the choice of leader.

Lam will be the former British colony’s first female chief executive when she takes office on July 1.

She got twice as many votes as her competitor, former Financial Secretary John Tsang.

Tsang is vastly more popular among Hong Kong’s people.

Protested demonstrated outside the voting center, fearing another five years of their country being effectively ruled by Beijing.

District Councilor for Yuen Long Ka Lun To said the past five years had been “a nightmare for Hong Kong people,” which would now continue for another five years.

“Carrie Lam openly admitted at the very beginning of her election scheme, that she will continue with the current system, current policy and current scheme headed by the current CE (Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying),” Ka Lun to lamented.

“This is the worst scheme for us, the worst news for us today in Hong Kong.”
