The catching of the “Phet” ball in Vietnam

Every country has different and unique traditions and festivals celebrated throughout the year.

In the Vinh Phuc province in Vietnam, villagers celebrate “Coup Phet” once a year. The “Phet” is a lucky ball which hundreds of men fight with one another for, as they believe it will bring them luck in the new year. The Phet ball is made from a rare wood with a diameter of 35cm.

Before the fight for the Phet ball begins, a ritual is held which is chaired by four village elders, and worships four generals to commemorate how soldiers were ttrained in the past.

Nowadays, the fighting for the Phet ball has turned quite violent, with even sticks and fists being fair game!
