LAS VEGAS—Prosecutors in Las Vegas have filed additional felony charges against a 22-year-old man accused of killing a local filmmaker sitting in a parked car outside a convenience store but missing customers inside during what authorities characterized as a random shooting rampage.
Jesus Javier Uribe appeared briefly Tuesday in custody before a Las Vegas judge who scheduled a bail hearing next Monday and a preliminary hearing Nov. 23 on 31 charges including murder, attempted murder, assault, robbery, and discharge of a firearm.
Uribe was not asked to enter a plea to the charges against him.
Police and prosecutors say Uribe wore a ballistic vest and gun belt as he walked to the store aiming a handgun early Nov. 4.
He is accused of earlier confronting several people on the way to the store, shooting into an unoccupied vehicle, and fatally shooting Curtis Leon Abraham, 36, sitting in another vehicle outside the store waiting for his girlfriend.
At least 20 shots were fired outside and inside the store, where Abraham’s girlfriend hid with a store clerk in a refrigerator cooler while other people escaped out the back door, prosecutors said. No one in the store was wounded.
Uribe allegedly took items from the store and left the area on foot. He was arrested more than 12 hours later after Las Vegas police issued a public plea for help and released the photo of the man with a gun entering the store.
Marguerite Brathwaite, a physician, and Abraham’s friend, told reporters Friday that he was a videographer whom she met in 2018 while her daughter, now 13, acted in a film production.
Brathwaite characterized Abraham as outgoing and “just a very kindhearted person.”
