China continues to urge restraint on North Korea

President Donald Trump had phone calls with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on April 23 about the situation with North Korea.

Following the calls, Abe expressed his support for Trump’s strong approach to the issues, whereas Xi called for all sides to show restraint.

A U.S. carrier strike group is days away from reaching the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang said it is ready to sink the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier.

Japan announced it will send warships to join the American fleet, and South Korea may do the same.

There are concerns that North Korea could launch a weapons test on April 24, the 85th anniversary of the founding of the North Korean army.
