China in Focus (Aug. 19): Xi Jinping Visits Flood Area, Received by ‘Actors’

China’s Yangtze River is seeing its biggest flooding in the past 40 years. Almost 2,000 people have been evacuated. And for the first time in decades, floodwater has reached a the toes of a famous giant Buddha statue.

China’s Belt and Road Initiative involves two-thirds of the world’s population. It could serve as the base for the communist superpower, on land, and in the air.

In a show of force, a U.S. warship has sailed through the waters between China and Taiwan, and for the first time, crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait approaching the Chinese coastline.

And during a visit to an area hit by flood, the head of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping, was received by a police official disguised as a peasant.
