Chinese authorities tried to hide the gene sequence of the COVID-19 virus. For example, in 2020, Chinese researchers made a request to the U.S. top health agency, asking officials there to delete genome sequences of early COVID-19 cases from a key database. The U.S. National Institutes of Health, or NIH, completed that request.
