A China expert says the escalating police force in Hong Kong isn’t just about Hong Kong. Apart from trying to take the city fully under its totalitarian control, the Chinese Communist regime could be using Hong Kong to take down President Donald Trump.

Since the Hong Kong protests started on March 31, U.S. officials—including Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo—have publicly condemned police violence and shown support for the pro-democracy movement.

However, not President Trump.

NTD’s China analyst Tang Hao says Trump may be holding back to show goodwill ahead of the trade war negotiation, but the Chinese regime may take advantage of his inaction to take him down.

Following a day of protests, Hong Kong police reached a new level after one person was shot on Monday.

Chinese officials said if Trump speaks out about Hong Kong, the Chinese regime can label it ill-will toward the trade negotiations.

“So this move by the Chinese Communist Party is an attack that puts Trump in a very awkward situation,” said Hao. “It’s almost a stab in the back.”

If the trade negotiations don’t succeed, farmers in the United States will pay the price and this will impact the support for Trump in the agricultural states.

“Many people in the U.S. care about democracy, human rights, rule of law,” Hao said.

He added that the real solution to the situation in Hong Kong is ultimately in the hands of the United States.
