Chinese leader Xi Jinping announced on May 15 ambitious plans for Asian and European governments to work more closely under China’s Belt and Road initiative.
Xi acknowledged that the initiative was in its early stages and faces daunting obstacles.
He hopes for cooperation in areas including law enforcement, economic policy, and anti-corruption.
The announcement comes right as leaders of 30 nations wrapped up a two-day meeting to promote the trade initiative.
It calls for expanding trade across Asia, Africa, and Europe by investing in ports, railways, and other facilities.
Governments including Russia, the United States, and India had expressed unease about Beijing’s possible political motives in pursuing the trade initiative.
