A bank manager in China risked his life to save a customer.

On April 7, a man wielding a knife walked into a branch of the Agricultural Bank of China in Binyang County, Guangxi Province.

Surveillance footage showed the robber approaching a female customer and holding a knife to her neck. With the woman as his hostage, the man demanded 10,000 yuan (about US$1,500).

The bank’s lobby manager reacted quickly. He offered himself as a hostage in exchange for the release of the woman.

“I am the lobby manager, so I’m responsible for keeping the safety of our customers. The first idea that came to my mind was to swap myself with the customer,” said the employee, who remained anonymous.

Soon after the swap occurred, the bank’s security guard overtook the robber.

The robber was later arrested by police, according to China’s state-run media.
