Chinese Premier Li Keqiang landed in New Zealand Sunday, March 26, to renegotiate the two nations’ current trade agreement.

New Zealand was the first developed nation to sign a free-trade pact with China, in 2008.

Since then other Pacific Rim nations have negotiated much better deals.

The visit began with a private dinner with Li and his wife Cheng Hong, and New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English and his wife Mary.

Serious negotiations will begin on Monday.

New Zealand has had diplomatic ties with China for 45 years.
