An undercover recording shows Jimmy Carr, the Associate Producer for CNN’s New Day doubling down on his previous comments that included calling American voters “stupid as [expletive].”
He also added criticism of CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, saying he and his colleagues spend a lot of time criticizing Cuomo and “can’t stand” him.
The newly-released video is the fourth in a series about CNN published by Project Veritas, a non-profit dedicated to exposing “corruption, dishonesty, self-dealing, waste, fraud, and other misconduct in both public and private institutions,” its website states.
The first video, released last week, shows CNN health producer John Bonifield saying CNN’s narrative about the collusion between the President Donald Trump campaign and Russia is “mostly bull[expletive].”
The second video featured CNN political commentator Van Jones saying the Russia story is “a big nothing burger.”
The third video featured Carr mostly expressing his negative views of President Donald Trump as well as saying almost all of his direct coworkers consider the President “crazy.”
But he also expressed a cynical view of CNN as well as the American electorate.
“CNN is impartial, right?” the undercover reporter asked.
“In theory,” Carr replied.
In another clip, the reporter asked: “would it be fair to question the—I don’t want to be rude here, I’ll be careful how to put it—you’re apparently some percentage Irish or Scottish. Would it be fair to question the intellect of the American voter?”
“Oh no. They’re stupid as [expletive],” Carr replied.
The reporters met with Carr again, Veritas founder James O’Keefe said in the last video. It seems the meeting took place at the same bar, but after the first two Veritas videos were published.
Carr is seen in the footage describing his and his colleagues’ reaction to the first Veritas video.
“It came out and we were all going: ‘Oh my God, how is this guy [Bonifield] so stupid, he’s talking to everyone and telling… Saying X,Y, Z about CNN’,” Carr said. “Then I went, ‘well, I talked to the couple of guys in a bar on Friday afternoon and I said things that we wouldn’t normally say’.”
Yet then he doubled down on his previous comments.
“I mean, granted, anything I’ve said to you I would defend on the record. I don’t think I’ve said anything wrong.”
In a different clip, Carr added a few comments on Chris Cuomo, CNN anchor and brother of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“I don’t have the gravitas [of Cuomo]. So…,” Carr said.
The conversation seems to have been about Carr’s ability to replace Cuomo as an anchor, though the onset of the conversation is not included in the recording
“I also don’t have a brother who’s the governor. So…,” Carr said.
“Well… That’s the gravitas,” one of the reporters said. “I’ve just sat here, for what? An hour and a half listening to you. You’re extremely intelligent, you’re very well spoken, I think you’re far better presenter than Chris Cuomo just on how you present the issue. I totally disagree with you there.”
Carr replied, “I cannot technically say anything, but I can simply say that there’s a lot of us that spend a lot of time in the newsroom criticizing just the same points.”
“We just can’t stand that guy, like the way he talks. We’re like, ‘please, shut up’,” Carr said.
The four videos come at a rough time for CNN. Two weeks ago, CNN retracted a story about the Trump-Russia collusion theory. Three journalists who worked on the story resigned in the aftermath. The story claimed that President Trump associate Anthony Scaramucci is linked with a $10 billion Russian investment firm. CNN has since issued an apology to Scaramucci.
The retraction and the resignations came about after the network was threatened with a $100 million libel suit, according to a Tuesday story based on anonymous sources published by the New York Post.
