The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2026/02/24/coast-guard-reinstates-56-members-who-were-dismissed-refusing-covid-vaccines-under">announced</a> on Feb. 24 that the Coast Guard has reinstated 56 members who were discharged from service by the Biden administration for not taking the COVID-19 vaccine.

The members will also receive back pay, allowances, bonus payments, rank, and seniority in grade, as determined by the Coast Guard, DHS said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called it a “victory for religious, personal, and medical freedom for all Americans.”

“The last administration’s vaccine mandates were unconstitutional, un-American, and a gross violation of personal freedom,” Noem said in a statement. “It was no way to treat the men and women who put everything on the line to keep our country safe.”

“President Trump is righting these wrongs and returning those unjustly removed members to service. This decision to reinstate these members of the Coast Guard is a major step in the right direction.”

Noem submitted an <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/2026-02/2025-182%20COVID-19_Group_Application_Redacted_0.pdf">application</a> to the Homeland Security Board to correct the military records on behalf of 59 Coast Guard members in May 2025. Of those, 56 were approved for reinstatement on Feb. 12.

On Aug. 21, 2021, then-Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin issued a mandate requiring all military members to take the COVID-19 vaccine. The mandate was rescinded on Jan. 10, 2023.

The Coast Guard implemented a similar mandate but rescinded it Jan. 11, 2023. While the mandate was in place, 274 Coast Guard enlisted members were discharged for refusing to take it.

When the Coast Guard rescinded its mandate, it began offering reinstatements for members discharged for refusing the jab and 69 service members of the 274 were reinstated.

President Donald Trump, shortly after being sworn into office in January 2025,  issued an executive order making reinstatement available for all service members who were discharged for refusing to take the vaccine.

All 205 remaining Coast Guardsmen who had been fired over the vaccine mandate were contacted and offered the opportunity for reinstatement, according to DHS. During the board review, three applicants chose to drop out of the process.

Between Aug. 24, 2021, and Jan. 10, 2023, over 8,000 service members were involuntarily <a href="https://www.war.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/4361100/war-department-reevaluates-discharge-characterizations-for-covid-vaccine-refusal/">discharged</a> from the military for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Department of War.

In December 2025, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth also <a href="https://media.defense.gov/2025/Dec/15/2003842948/-1/-1/1/RESTORING-HONOR-TO-SERVICE-MEMBERS-SEPARATED-UNDER-THE-CORONAVIRUS-DISEASE-2019-VACCINE-MANDATE.PDF">ordered</a> the military services to reevaluate the discharge status of service members who were involuntarily discharged solely for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine to see who might be eligible for an upgrade to an honorable discharge.
